"The Dandelion Effect"
By Charles "HammerTime" Snapp, Drake Elite Team Member
Imagine sitting in a rice field pit, as the sun first peaks out in the horizon. You hear a strange noise, only to realize it's the roar of wings from a huge flock of ducks circling your decoys, wanting to get their chance to eat the rice. What a vision that is, but let's take it a step further. Ducks sure do like to eat rice and through the natural harvest process, there is normally quite a bit of grain on the ground, but this year is going to be different. [...read more...]

"Trying To Understand"
By Charles "HammerTime" Snapp, Drake Elite Team
To some extent ducks are a predictable species. While they are highly mobile, which presents a challenge in itself; they do have rather small brains. Small, when compared to the larger mammals that have the passion to pursue them. However, we do know ducks are going to migrate and we even have a good idea when they will start. How far they go, when they start the migration, can be determined by factors, such as the moon, temperatures, available habitat and even food supply. [...read more...]

"Influences"
By Charles "HammerTime" Snapp, Drake Elite Team
This past weekend my wife and I attended a Hank Williams Jr. and Lynard Skynard concert. As expected, the concert was over the top. Since it was on a Friday night and Jackie keeps the office open later on Fridays, we had to rush to make the opening act, an hour and a half away. The drive to Memphis meant skipping supper and by the time the concert was over, I could have eaten the rear end off a water buffalo. Heading for a nearby restaurant, Jackie and I got a table an ordered up … and that's the basis for this duck hunting story! [...read more...]

"Fat and Happy"
By Charles "HammerTime" Snapp, Drake Elite Team
Late winter and early spring are a very important, but often overlooked, period in the life cycle of a duck. Even in the southern most portion of the flyways, most of us have put away our decoys, cleaned our guns and thinking about going fishing or getting out the turkey loads. These series of events usually put the duck population on the back burner, even though the next few months will have a dramatic impact on the season(s) to come. [...read more...]

Her First Duck Hunt
By Jason Thompson, Drake Waterfowl Web Manager
The morning began like most mornings when you are headed to the duck blind. The alarm clock sounded early, anticipation was high and the thought of another duck hunt being etched into my memory was something that excited me.

This day, however, was different. I would not be the one to fire the gun. In fact, as much as I would have liked to have been shooting this day, the season had ended for me two weeks earlier. On this cold weekend in early February it was the state of Alabama's Youth Hunt and I would be taking my oldest daughter, Emma Frances (10) out to give her a taste of what she had only seen second hand. One Gaggle of Geese
By Jason Topper, Drake Field Expert
Ever sit in your blind and think to yourself or say to your buddy, "all I want is one gaggle of geese to come in." I don't know how many times I have said that phrase, or a barrage of other things like, "one more group and we are done", or "as soon as we start packing up they're going to come". All of those clichés have slowly stopped coming out of my mouth since one calm - and rather productive - morning that ended in near tragedy. [...read more...]

Seasons End... or Beginning?
By Jerry Kryspin, Jr., Drake Field Expert Team
As the sun sets on that last cold day afield in January, with the winds calming down and the whistling wings settling in for another night's sleep, the thoughts began running through my mind. It was the thoughts of success during the season that had just passed. It was the thoughts high-fives, handshakes, and ear-to-ear grins that bring us back to the field day after day, year after year. First mallard is something special
Congratulations to our friend Luke Barton on taking his first drake mallard this season. Even better, it was banded! Luke was joined on the hunt by his father and some close family friends. We are excited about this incredible moment that Luke will no doubt remember forever - first drake mallard, first band, and good friends there to be a part of it. The bird was banded in Wisconsin in 1999.

"Delta Waterfowl Made A Difference"
By Charles "HammerTime" Snapp, Drake Elite Team
A couple of months ago I titled my column manuscript "The Beginning of the End." That column was based on critical changes proposed on the method used to distribute the money generated from the sale of Canadian Duck Stamps. The program used since 1984 had come under fire and some groups, including at least one non-profit waterfowl group, had wanted the distribution system changed. [...read more...]

Thin to Win
By Chris Hustad, Drake Field Expert
It's around 15 degrees, and my watch says 8am on a late October morning in 1993. I have my head tucked under a staked-up snow goose shell, as I watch a flock of eight snows coming at us 200 yards away. Luckily, there's just enough wind this morning to keep the birds on an approach within shooting range. My hands are starting to lock up a bit as I stuff them through a hole in my white, 1-piece painter's outfit, and into my parka coat pockets. I started to ponder whether or not I should have been wearing my thick gloves, despite handicapping my shooting ability. [...read more...]

Your First Hunt
By Casey Buck, Drake Field Expert Team
Author's Note: Being twenty two years old it may seem a little out of place for me to be writing about the importance of youth hunting. Even though I may not come close to others in the amount of days in the field I can truly tell you how much hunting has benefited my life and how I have seen it benefit others as well. That is why the importance of influencing the younger generations on the benefits of safe and courteous hunting should be a big goal for all outdoorsman. [...read more...]

"Another Season For Diesel Ducks"
By Charles "HammerTime" Snapp, Drake Elite Team
At this writing, Arkansas is one week away from the opening day of waterfowl season and conditions are extreme. At the same time last year, we had already experienced two major floods and every river, oxbow lake, ditch and slough were full of water. However, NOAA and the Farmer's Almanac were both giving indications this would be a dry and warm year for our part of the south … and it appears they were correct. [...read more...]

As an outdoor writer, I receive several press releases every week. They come from a variety of different manufacturers and non-profit organizations, including Delta Waterfowl and I always look forward to hearing what Delta has to say. However, the press release I received this week was nothing short of alarming … at least to me. [...read more...]

Work Weekend at the Ole' Duck Club
By Ron Pharr, Drake Field Expert
Each fall we find ourselves thinking about the upcoming waterfowl season more than ever before, and the success of the year all starts with a few good work weekends at the ole' duck club. When the "Dog Days" of summer finally start to dwindle, we begin planning our work weekends at the duck club. These weekends are not valued as a means of relaxation from the long everyday work week, but a necessity for success for the upcoming waterfowl season. [...read more...]

Youth Hunting: Our Kids Deserve Nothing Less
By Rob Olson, Delta Waterfowl
My first memory of hunting was back in the early 1970s. I was hidden under some wheat straw in a large stack of the earthy-smelling stuff with my father, uncle and some of their friends. Our quarry was Canada geese, and I could tell this was serious business from the tone in my dad's voice when he cautioned, "don't move". Back then, honkers weren't as abundant as they are today. Duck numbers up slightly overall
By Ducks Unlimited
MEMPHIS, Tenn., July 11, 2007 – The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) today released its preliminary report on mid-continent breeding ducks and habitats, based on surveys conducted in May. Overall, duck populations increased 14 percent since last year with an estimated 41.2 million breeding ducks on the surveyed area. As a result of winter snowfall and good precipitation, habitat conditions are similar or slightly improved compared to conditions in 2006.

"The 14 percent increase in breeding numbers for the 10 surveyed species is consistent with what Ducks Unlimited’s field biologists have observed across the U.S. and Canadian breeding grounds this spring," said Ducks Unlimited’s Executive Vice President, Don Young. "Excellent brood-rearing habitat is present in many areas and brood survival is expected to be above average." [...read more...]

Teaching Kids the Sport of Waterfowling
By Jason Patterson, Drake Field Expert
This month we are going to talk about some of the blessings of the earth, children of course! A lot of us have children of our own and we all know the battles of life that face today's generation and future generations for that matter. Kids today are very different from past generations and face very many difficult challenges in life. They have various things to choose from, good and bad! Most of the time, kids spend their days playing video games and so forth. Parents are busier than ever and a lot of kids have to suffer from that. It is not all the parents fault either, it takes more and more to make a living, times are tougher than they ever were and we have to find some way to stop all the stress and madness of today's high tech world.[...read more...]

Waterfowl Hunting Legacy
By Erroll Cheney, Drake Field Expert
The future of hunting may be in your hands! For those of us who are "hardcore" waterfowlers, we live for the season and work extremely hard to get birds to set up to land in our decoys. The future of this tradition is at risk. We all need to do our part to help preserve this heritage. This is a passion to be passed on to the next generation! [...read more...]

From Minnesota to Manitoba
By Charlie Seitzer, Drake Field Expert
The 8 hour trip from St. Peter, Minnesota to St. Pierre, Manitoba didn't include a dramatic change in scenery that made our jaws drop; it was the number of birds on our first scouting trip that caught our attention. Our original destination was Selkirk, Manitoba which is located closely to the Oak Hammock refuge. From the recommendation from a few friends who were also destined for the same area just days before our trip, we shortstopped our trip to the St. Pierre area. St. Pierre is located just 30 minutes south of Winnipeg and from the phone calls that we received before our trip the ducks outnumbered the geese. [...read more...]

"Old Drake"
By Tommy Haase Seitzer, Drake Field Expert
I have heard several hunters over the years make the comment, "Man I have the best dog." Some of those dogs were great dogs and others not so great. But lets be honest everyone's idea of a "good dog" are different. I for one think its great so many hunters are proud of their retrieving friends. After all these dogs give everything they have for us day in and day out. This is a story of such a dog and while he may have not been the "Best Dog" he was truly special. [...read more...]

The Lesson
By David Miller, Drake Field Expert
Let me tell you about my normal Sundays during duck season. Up at O dark thirty, dress like an Eskimo in a snow storm, fill the thermos with coffee, load the dog and head to the duck club. Arrive, get geared up while talking sports, head out to the blinds, wait for first light AND PRAY THE OTHERS FORGOT THEIR CALLS! Now don't get me wrong, the folks I hunt with aren't doing anything wrong. Most of the time they rely on me to call. But when I am out of the blind, or not with them, they have problems getting ducks in range. These problems are due to a lack of knowledge on working ducks and some simple calling rules.

You Can't Keep a Good Man Down
By Kelly Haydel, Drake Elite Team
"Well fellas, I think it's about that time. This has been a REALLY good hunt." That was the last thing that my father, Eli Haydel, said on the last hunt I had with him during the 04-05 season. It was truly one heck of a hunt! It originally started out as just Dad and I. But due to miscommunication with another hunting party, a close friend, Jason Campbell was standing at the landing ready to hunt and had no blind to hunt. Dad said, "Come on man. The more the merrier." Dad has always been fond of other duck hunters that share his passion, especially when they're born south of I-10.

The Perfect Hunt
By Lorie Walker, Drake Field Expert
Have you ever been on a hunt where absolutely everything fell into place? That's what happened to my hunting partner, Jim Rule and me on Tuesday, October 18, 2006.

We had scouted the area the night before and saw several hundred geese sitting on the lake. We waited patiently and were rewarded when several small groups left the lake a short time later and we were able to follow them to their feeding area of the night. We have hunted this area for the past two years and have the permission from most of the landowners in the area to hunt geese on their land. After looking at our plat book and locating the field, we made a few phone calls and were granted permission to hunt this field.

Late Summer Habitat Conditions in Canada

Conditions in eastern Canada remain very good while conditions are more varied in western Canada where the warm, dry weather continues. With few exceptions, waterfowl production was average or better throughout the country this year.

Don't Abandon the Waterfowl Tradition Once the Season Ends!
By Mario Friendy, Drake Field Expert
Does every waterfowl hunter anticipate opening day? Is it like Christmas Eve when you were a kid? Are you too anxious to even sleep the night before? Do you toss and turn thinking of what the first day will bring, hoping you don't sleep through the alarm clock? I think all those things are bottled up inside every waterfowl hunter. For some it burns brighter and hotter…..others it burns lightly just to stay lit.

The Dog Days of Summer
By Ron Pharr, Drake Field Expert
Too hot to fish, too hot for golf, and those new fall hunting catalogs are arriving in the mail daily making the passion for waterfowling burn that much hotter. It is this dreadful time of the year that is filled with inactivity for thousands of waterfowlers. Yes, I am talking about the dog days of summer and it is during this stagnation that we search for some activities that you can do indoors to beat the heat. Here are few things I do during this time of year that has me ready come opening day of hunting season.

J Paul Jackson Finishes a Strong Second at the SRS Crown Championship!
By Kelley Powers, Director of Media Relations Drake Waterfowl
It was just another day at the office, or should we say another day at the SRS Crown Championship for Drake Elite Team Member J Paul Jackson and his lab "Achilles." J Paul and "Achilles" finished second in the strongly competitive series finale, right behind professional trainer Mike Pierce and his lab "Free."

This marks the third year in a row in which J Paul has finished in the top two of the SRS finale event. The first year J Paul and "Achilles" took home the gold and then followed the next year with a second place finish in 2005.

Icing on the cake this year was the fact that he had two dogs to qualify for the final event. His second dog, "Murphy," (which won a preliminary qualifying event in Stuttgart earlier in the year) placed an overall fifth place in Hot Springs.

All of us here at Drake would like to congratulate J Paul, Mike Pierce and all the ones who qualified and competed for the SRS Crown Championship!

Carrying on the Tradition
By Ron Pharr, Drake Field Expert

Another season has come to an end, and for many of us the time spent in the blind this year made numerous long-lasting memories. This past season is one that created a memory of a lifetime for me as I was able to share it with my four year old son, Gaston. It all started with a long road trip from Alabama to our camphouse located near Clarendon, Arkansas for a three day weekend of waterfowling.

Drake Elite Team Member Hunter Grounds Captures the 2006 International Goose Calling Championship

Even with his left hand broken, eighteen year old and reigning World Champion Goose Caller, Hunter Grounds took home the title of the 2006 International Goose Calling Champion.

A week earlier, Hunter broke his left hand, which left the question of being able to compete in the International still to answer. It took nearly three days until he could move his fingers and on the fourth day he tried to hold a call. Doctors were kind to allow Hunter to wear a temporary cast which allowed him to still move his thumb. This act of kindness to Hunter's desperate request paid off as the International title boasts a $5,000 purse to the winner and a title that ranks as one of the toughest to accomplish. The International title adds to an already impressive resume of calling championships including two World Championship titles since 2003.

All of us at Drake Waterfowl would like to congratulate Hunter on this latest accomplishment!

Migration Days
By Josh Medlin, Drake Field Expert

The 2005-2006 Duck season has been one of the worst seasons concerning duck migrations that I've ever witnessed. With above average temperatures and one of the worst droughts seen in Oklahoma for the past 100 years I can only think that this must have been what it was like to live during the dust bowl.

Breaking the Tradition—Wood vs. Acrylic
By Rod Haydel, Drake Elite Associate

What’s the deal nowadays with acrylic calls? Their popularity has grown to overwhelming proportions in the last few years. 2005/2006 Northeastern California Opener
By Corbin Wadlow, Drake Field Expert

For 8 long months I anticipated the opening day of the Western waterfowl season and it had finally arrived. In August Tommy Haase, Dan King and myself had sent in our application for the infamous California/Oregon waterfowl Valhalla known as the Klamath Basin. In this basin sits some of the best waterfowl staging areas in North America. This area is probably the biggest bottle neck of the Pacific Flyway.

Early Season Hunting
By Ryan Graves, Drake Field Expert

The first few weeks of duck season can be my most favorite time to hunt. I by no means consider myself a Mallard purist and the early season provides a variety of birds to hunt. Delaying Tactics

While most guest of our camp are impressed with the details in our tactics, they are total shocked in our lack of calling at certain times of the season. Hunting Divers
By Luke Hickman, Drake Field Expert

Growing up in coastal North Carolina, I've had my fair share of diver hunting which is often over looked by most hunters. Divers are present on all the flyways and can offer good shooting when numbers of puddlers are low. Hunting divers can be a game of extremes with some hunters taking the minimalist approach while others go all out; it's literally up to you how far you want to take it.

Getting After the Geese
By Glen Gillespie, Drake Field Expert

With all the competition in the goose fields today, it is not hard to understand why geese are becoming increasingly more wary. Custom decoys, flags and the assorted gadgets have been making it easier for geese hunters to fill our limits but increasing the decoy shyness of geese that have been shot at a time or two. It's safe to say that a lot of the geese you are hunting have seen almost every decoy set-up by the time they leave their first staging grounds.

But since he was potty trained and I felt I could always use another person to talk to in the blind what did I have to lose?
