My husband Jeff and I currently live in McLouth, Kansas, which is about 40 miles west-northwest of the Kansas City metro. When I first met Jeff I had never shot a firearm and had never been hunting, although I always loved outdoor activities. I was immediately drawn to his passion for the outdoors, his love of hunting, and his respect for wildlife. Of course, to spend any time with him during hunting season, it became clear to me that I had to join him. I was amazed at his knowledge and shooting skill - it is simply effortless for him to raise his gun to his shoulder and drop whatever is in his sights. I was also greatly impressed watching his black lab, Gauge, work a field of thick cover, seeking out and flushing those wily roosters. At first I would just tag along and watch, but soon that wasn't enough. I started to learn more about the wildlife that we were pursuing, how to handle a gun, and how to handle a dog.
I've experienced a lot if wonderful "firsts" over the last 8 years, including my first shotgun, a Stoeger Condor 20-gauge over-under, and my first gun dog, Drake, a yellow lab. Since I didn't know the first thing about training a gun dog, I sent Drake to a pro trainer when he was 6-months old. I would drive the hour-long trip to the trainer's kennel every weekend to see how Drake was progressing, learn how to handle him, and watch the pro train more advanced dogs. I met a lot of other dog owners during those weekend training sessions who had the same passion for retriever work and hunting. These new acquaintances suggested that I handle Drake in retriever hunt tests to keep him sharp before and after the hunting season. So Drake and I ran a few Junior-level retriever hunt tests early that fall and I was hooked! What a great way to be outdoors, work your dog, meet new friends, and extend the "hunting" season through the spring, summer, and early fall. The following year I bought a new black lab puppy for Jeff since Gauge was getting older and would be ready for retirement soon. Next thing you know, Jeff was also hooked on the retriever hunt test game and we were buying more talented retrievers. We now have a total of 6 labs, all females except Drake, who loves it. We drive all over kingdom come to test and title our dogs, as well as to hunt with them.
Since our hunting season is extended with retriever hunt tests, we get a lot of use out of our hunting gear, including camo clothing, waders, boots, hats, decoys, duck/goose calls, etc. I prefer to use Drake Waterfowl products because I know that they have been designed to stand up to a lot of wear and tear. Drake Waterfowl listens to its customers and constantly strives to make improvements based on user feedback. I am left-handed and typically find it difficult to find equipment made specifically for lefties. The availability of camo clothing in women's sizes is also very limited. Because I know that Drake Waterfowl listens to its customers, my goal is to partner with Drake Waterfowl and its sister companies to develop and field test a line of gear designed specifically for women and for lefties.
